Los Arcos de Mismaloya are Puerto Vallarta's most recognizable seascape: a group of rock formations off Mismaloya beach, south of the city, with arches and tunnels carved by the sea over thousands of years. They're also one of the best snorkeling spots in the bay.
A protected place
Since 1975 a federal decree has protected the marine life of Los Arcos and the water around them. That's why there's no fishing there, and visitors and boats are asked to look after the seabed and its wildlife.
What you'll see
Schools of colorful tropical fish among the rocks, sea urchins, starfish and, with some luck, sea turtles or small rays. Up on the rocks, seabirds such as pelicans and boobies nest.
No experience needed: with a mask, snorkel and life jacket anyone who can swim can enjoy it.

When to go
You can go year-round. In the dry months (roughly November to May) the water is usually clearer; in the rainy season rivers can cloud it on some days. Mornings almost always bring the calmest sea.
How to get there
Los Arcos can only be reached by sea. The most common way is a boat tour from Puerto Vallarta that includes gear and a guide; small boats also leave from Mismaloya beach.
How to protect the area
Don't stand on rocks or coral, don't touch or feed the fish, use reef-safe sunscreen and don't swim into the tunnels. Always wear a life jacket and stay close to your guide.
